What to pack for your first long ride
In short. Bring water, familiar food, a repair kit and a charged phone.
A clear return plan matters more than finishing every kilometre.

Long means longer than your usual ride
If you normally ride for an hour, a noticeably longer outing is already a long ride. Choose a manageable pace and a route you can shorten. Your first long day around Moscow does not need to be a test of character.
Your packing list
- Water and food: bring familiar snacks. Drink and eat in small amounts before strong thirst or hunger. Plan refill points; quantities depend on duration and weather.
- Repairs: a compatible tube, pump, tyre levers and a multitool, a compact set of tools. Pack the appropriate kit for tubeless tyres. Know how to use it.
- Communication: charged phone, saved route and emergency contact. A power bank can help on a long day.
- Payment and identification: means to pay for food and a return journey, identification and emergency details.
- Clothing: familiar kit, a forecast-appropriate extra layer, helmet and working lights. Save new shoes for a short trial.
Plan the return too
Check brakes, tyre pressure and wheel security. Tell somebody your route and expected return time. If using public transport as a backup, check its bicycle-carrying rules in advance.
Ride the opening kilometres more gently than excitement suggests. Pause before you are exhausted. Stop for pain, dizziness or unusual symptoms. Ending early is a sensible option.
Review hand signals and first road rides. If the bike needs attention, visit a workshop before adding distance.
What to do now
- Choose a manageable route with water stops and exit options.
- Pack the evening before and check bike, food, phone and forecast.
- Share the plan and start gently, keeping energy for the way back.
