Cycling traffic rules: the basics in Russia

In short. Russian cycling rules may differ from those you learnt at home.
Check where riding is permitted, signal early and walk across pedestrian crossings.

Where adults may ride

Use cycle infrastructure first. Riding at the right carriageway edge is allowed under specified conditions, including absent or unusable cycle infrastructure. Pavement riding also has specific conditions — Russian Traffic Rules, 24.1–24.2.

Dismount if permitted riding among pedestrians endangers or obstructs them — 24.6. Bicycles are prohibited on motorways — 16.1. Do not assume a quiet-looking Moscow road is suitable.

Turns, crossings and signals

Signal before manoeuvring and check that the move is safe. Signalling gives no priority — 8.1–8.2. Learn the gestures in our hand-signal guide.

Left turns and U-turns are prohibited on roads with tram traffic or several lanes in your direction, apart from specified exceptions — 24.8. Choose a safe walking option when unsure.

Riding across pedestrian crossings is prohibited — 24.8. Dismount and walk your bike. Follow traffic signals — 6.5 and 6.13.

Lights and equipment

At night, in poor visibility and in tunnels a bicycle must have its lamps on — rule 19.1. Bicycle equipment includes working brakes, steering and a sound signal, plus prescribed reflectors and lighting — vehicle-admission provisions, paragraph 6.

Keep at least one hand on the bars; riding while intoxicated is prohibited — 24.8 and 2.7.

What to do now

  1. Check your bike and lights before leaving.
  2. Review permitted riding space and walking crossings on your planned route.
  3. Begin with a short familiar outing: first road rides.
