Winter

Winter cycling for beginners: trainer, Wattbike or track?

In short. A few manageable winter sessions help you arrive in spring with a routine already in place. Try a home trainer, an indoor bike, coached track riding or cycling mixed with general exercise. Aim to reach May feeling ready and keen to ride, rather than tired of training.

Give spring a small head start

Moscow winter can make your first cycling season feel very far away. Start small. Pick two times each week when you move instead of waiting for perfect riding weather. A repeatable routine is a useful result in itself.

You can maintain the habit of exercise, learn a new format and find out what fits your week. The aim is to reach May wanting to ride. You do not need impressive numbers to make that happen.

Your bike, indoors

A home trainer holds your bike while you pedal in place. Some support the rear wheel. Direct-drive trainers replace it and connect to the bike’s drivetrain, the parts that carry your pedalling effort to the wheel. Check compatibility before buying.

Set up a fan, water, a towel and a floor mat. Without outdoor airflow, indoor riding gets warm quickly. Wipe sweat from the bike afterwards, especially around the bars and fittings.

Try a short ride with music before building a complicated virtual setup. If the trainer makes noise, think about timing and neighbours. Convenience matters: equipment you enjoy using is more useful than equipment you avoid.

An indoor bike at a studio

A Wattbike is a stationary training bike. Wattbike is a brand, though you may hear the name used loosely for similar equipment. Ask a coach to adjust the saddle and bars and explain the controls.

Watts measure power: how much work you do each second. On your first visit, ignore comparisons with the person beside you. Get comfortable and learn what a gentle effort feels like.

A studio gives you a booking, a reason to leave home and somebody to ask for help. If you do not speak Russian, ask whether the introductory session can be explained in English. The best first-session result is wanting to return.

Track riding in Krylatskoye

A velodrome is a closed cycling track with banked corners. Track bikes typically have no brakes and a fixed gear: when the wheel turns, the pedals turn too. It is a different skill from road riding.

Book an introductory session with an instructor. Confirm beginner access, equipment and language arrangements before going. Do not arrive with your road bike expecting to join track traffic immediately. Current booking conditions in Krylatskoye need checking.

The track can bring back the feeling of moving through space during winter. Learn the rules first. Speed can follow.

Running and general fitness

Russian schedules may include ОФП, pronounced roughly “OF-P”. It means general physical preparation: strength, balance and mobility work. Simple controlled squats, basic trunk exercises and balance practice can fit around cycling. Get help with unfamiliar movements.

Already run? Keep some easy running if you enjoy it. New to running? Begin with walking and short gentle running intervals on an ice-free surface. A brisk walk is useful movement too. You do not have to turn every outing into a workout.

A beginner’s starting week

For a healthy beginner, one starting example is two easy sessions of 20–30 minutes on separate days. Warm up gently, then pedal at an effort where you can speak in full sentences. Finish with a few easy minutes.

Once that feels comfortable, gradually extend one session. Add a separate fitness session or a walk if you want. Avoid increasing duration and intensity together. Leave room for rest and your normal life.

Skip maximum-effort tests at the start. Stop for pain, dizziness or unusual breathlessness. Discuss training with a clinician if you have health restrictions.

Keep some excitement for May

Choose a spring goal: a familiar route or your first relaxed club ride. Missing a session does not create a debt to repay with hard training. Notice sleep, energy and motivation. Persistent tiredness means it is time to ease back.

What to do now

  1. Choose one format and arrange a trial session. Check instructor and language arrangements if needed.
  2. Reserve two short slots this week and prepare water, comfortable clothing and your setup.
  3. After two weeks, review how you feel. Build gradually and keep rest days in the plan.
